In this update:
It Is Time For The House to Act: Senate Bill 210This week, I once again spoke on the Senate floor in support of Senate Bill 210, also known as Bernard Gribbin’s Law, legislation I introduced to strengthen protections for public transit operators and hold those who attack or dangerously interfere with them accountable. Bernard was a SEPTA bus operator, Army veteran, and public servant who was tragically killed on his bus route in 2023. The Senate passed this legislation with bipartisan support, and now it is time for the House to act. As Bernard’s family prepares for the sentencing of the woman responsible for his death, we have an opportunity to honor his life and service by making sure meaningful change is made in his name. You can watch my full remarks above. Turning the Fountain Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness MonthDuring session this week, we turned the Capitol fountain pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It was a special moment to stand alongside survivors, advocates and families whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. So many people in our communities know just how difficult that fight can be. Proud to join the PA Breast Cancer Coalition in honoring those we’ve lost, celebrating survivors and standing behind everyone still fighting. There are resources available for those impacted by breast cancer, from screening information to support programs. You can visit the link in my website here to learn more and find resources available to you and your family. Op-Ed on Skill Games
Pennsylvania has an opportunity to finally regulate and tax skill games – and put that new revenue to work for taxpayers. In my latest op-ed, I explain why I believe a portion of that funding should go toward mass transit and critical infrastructure across our Commonwealth. To read the full op-ed visit: Tax Skill Games to Fund Mass Transit – Senator Picozzi Ribbon Cutting at the Northeast Propel Academy! It was great to be at the Northeast Community Propel Academy to celebrate the official launch of the Player Academy of Excellence (PLAE) here in Philadelphia! PLAE is focused on giving young people the support and opportunities they need to succeed – through education, mentorship, health and wellness, sports, leadership, and more. I was glad to say a few words and join Gary Player, the PLAE team, students, families, and community members for the ribbon cutting. Investing in our young people and giving them more opportunities to learn, grow, and reach their potential is an investment in the future of Northeast Philadelphia. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this new academy possible, and welcome to the Northeast! Visit to Nazareth HospitalI recently had the opportunity to visit Nazareth hospital and sit down with their team to hear directly about some of the challenges they’re facing, from workforce shortages to the financial pressures affecting hospitals here in Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania. Nazareth has been part of Northeast Philadelphia for more than 80 years, and hospitals like it play an important role in making sure our neighbors have access to care close to home. I appreciated the opportunity to get a better understanding of what they’re seeing every day. Most importantly, thank you to the doctors, nurses, support staff and everyone at Nazareth who shows up each day to care for our community. KenCrest Home VisitOn Friday, I had the opportunity to visit one of KenCrest’s community homes here in Northeast Philadelphia and learn more about the support they provide to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I appreciated the chance to sit down with the KenCrest team and talk about the challenges facing Director Support Professionals, particularly recruiting and retaining the workforce needed to provide consistent, quality care. Visits like this give me a better understanding of what providers, staff and the people they serve are experiencing every day—and what can we be working on in Harrisburg to better support them. Thank you to the KenCrest team for welcoming me and for all that you do. Joe In The News
