Youth Leadership Summit

Senator Picozzi with a group of students sitting around a table holding green folders

Thirteen impressive student leaders from across seven schools in the state senate district joined me for our Youth Leadership Summit, a thoughtful roundtable discussion focused on the issues impacting students and schools in our community.

Students shared valuable perspectives on topics including mental health, AI governance and usage, workforce and career opportunities, housing costs, and the importance of third spaces. Their ideas, insight, and willingness to engage in meaningful conversations were very encouraging.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this discussion so impactful, and a special thank you to Holy Family University for hosting us and helping create a space for these important conversations.

This was the first of what we hope will become an ongoing series of Youth Leadership Summits, and I look forward to continuing these conversations with the next generation of leaders across Northeast Philadelphia.

DRCC Check Presentation

I was proud to present a check for $500,000 alongside Representative Joe Hoehenstein at Riverfront North Partnership to support the construction of the Tacony Boat Launch. Investments like these are helping improve public access to the waterfront, restore the shoreline, and create new recreational opportunities for Northeast Philadelphia residents.

This funding will support phase 1 of the project, including a non-motorized boat ramp, shore restoration, removal of unsafe fishing wharf, and improved access to the riverfront. These projects help revitalize the northern Delaware River waterfront while creating jobs and expanding access to one of our community’s greatest natural resources.

I look forward to seeing this project continue to move forward and become a lasting asset for our community.

Unclaimed Property Event

This week, our office hosted another successful Unclaimed Property Event! More than $35,000 was returned to residents. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to check for unclaimed funds and take advantage of their valuable service. We are grateful to PA State Treasurer Stacy Garrity and her office for partnering with us to help put money back into the hands of Northeast Philadelphia families.

Visit to Thomas Holme

I recently had a productive conversation with Philadelphia School District Dr. Tony Watlington about the current state of our public schools and how we can work together to support sustainable growth, attract and retain quality teachers, and expand opportunities for students across our community.

Following our discussion, we toured the newly reopened Thomas Holme School, which welcomed students back in January. We visited different grade levels, including a class giving presentations for Multicultural Week. It was inspiring to see students proudly sharing projects about their cultures and family histories and celebrating the diversity that makes Northeast Philadelphia so special. A special thank you Principal Micah Winterstein for his hospitality and dedication to students in the community.

I also encourage residents to attend Thomas Holme’s public art exhibition on Monday night, featuring student-created music, dance, and artwork celebrating the arts and incredible talents of these young students.

Save for Education and the Opportunity to Win $5,529

Six increasingly higher stacks of quarters with the last stack topped by a small graduation cap and tassel.

State Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced the fifth annual 529 Day Promotion is running throughout May. Pennsylvania families who contribute at least $10 to their PA 529 account this month could be eligible to win one of six regional awards of $5,529 to boost their education savings.

The PA 529 College and Career Savings Program is a tax-advantaged way for families to save for a wide variety of education, including technical training, college, apprenticeship, credential program and K-12 expenses. Saving with a PA 529 does not impact eligibility for Pennsylvania state financial aid.

The PA 529 Guaranteed Savings Plan helps families save at today’s tuition rates to cover tomorrow’s tuition expenses and the PA 529 Investment Plan offers a wide variety of investment options to choose from. Find official rules and learn more about how to make an eligible contribution here.

Mammo May: No-Cost Breast Cancer Screenings and Diagnostic Imaging

Large fountain with pink water outside Pennsylvania Capitol and words “No-cost breast cancer screenings and diagnostic imaging.

In Pennsylvania, we’ve enacted laws to cover breast cancer screenings and diagnostic breast imaging at no cost for individuals with state-regulated insurance. I urge women to take advantage of these potentially lifesaving laws.

Under Act 1 of 2023, supplemental screenings including breast MRI, ultrasounds and BRCA-related genetic testing and counseling are covered at no cost for those with an increased risk who are insured under PA law. Under Act 52 of 2025, which is currently in the implementation stage, diagnostic breast imaging including diagnostic mammograms, breast MRI and ultrasounds are covered at no cost for individuals insured under state law who are of average risk or higher.

Learn more about no-cost screenings here. Learn more about no-cost diagnostic imaging here.

Information on no-cost mammograms for those without insurance can be found here.
